Earthquakes And Biblical Eschatology

At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.

From Mount Sinai to Golgotha to the final visions of Revelation, the earth's shaking signals divine activity. When God draws near, the earth trembles. When God judges, the earth convulses. And when God brings history to its appointed end, the earth will shake as it has never shaken since the day it was made.

This article traces the theology of earthquakes in Scripture – as a sign of the end of the End Times, a feature of the coming 7-year Tribulation, and finally as a divine instrument of the greatest geological event in human history.

In the Bible, seismic activity is not merely geological. It signals divine activity. When God descends on Mount Sinai to give Moses the Law, “the whole mountain trembled violently” (Exodus 19:18). When Elijah stands on Horeb, “there was an earthquake” (1 Kings 19:11). When David describes God’s rescue, he writes, “The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry” (Psalm 18:7).

The prophets extend this into judgement. Isaiah declares, “The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is violently shaken” (Isaiah 24:21). Haggai records the divine promise: “In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land” (Haggai 2:6) – a text the author of Hebrews quotes to describe the final removal of all that can be shaken, so that the unshakeable kingdom may remain (Hebrews 12:26-27).

This establishes the pattern: when heaven decisively intersects earth, the ground responds with violent shaking.

Most significantly, earthquakes accompany the central events of redemptive history. At the moment of Christ’s death, “the earth shook, the rocks split” (Matthew 27:51). At His resurrection, “there was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven” (Matthew 28:2). Both the cross and the resurrection are marked by seismic disturbance, as if creation itself cannot remain neutral.

This establishes the pattern: when heaven decisively intersects earth, the ground responds with violent shaking.

Earthquakes as a Sign That the End Is Near

On the Mount of Olives, the disciples asked Jesus a question that every generation since has echoed: “What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3)

Among other signs, Jesus’ answer includes the sign of earthquakes: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains” (Matthew 24:7-8).

Luke’s parallel account is even more expansive: “There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven” (Luke 21:11).

Similarly, this is the sign: the frequency of earthquakes around the world will increase, and their severity will rise as well.

Pay careful attention to 2 things Jesus says here.

First, the metaphor of birth pains. This is not merely a description of earthquakes; it speaks to their increasing frequency and intensity. Birth pains begin mildly, then become more frequent and intense as delivery approaches. Similarly, this is the sign: the frequency of earthquakes around the world will increase, and their severity will rise as well. The result will be high death tolls.

Second, these earthquakes must occur concurrently with the other signs Jesus speaks of within the same time frame to qualify as a legitimate sign.

Second, these earthquakes must occur concurrently with the other signs Jesus speaks of within the same time frame to qualify as a legitimate sign. Earthquakes are a constant feature of Earth's history and, by themselves, are not an indicator. Together, this plethora of catastrophes will signal the onset of the end of this present age.

Are we in that time window? A case can certainly be made.

In recent years, devastating earthquakes, along with pandemics, wars, and other fearful events, have plagued the earth. The massive 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquake, measuring 7.8, was followed closely by a magnitude 7.5 aftershock, which devastated southern Turkey and northern Syria and resulted in more than 62,000 deaths.

The most devastating earthquakes of 2026 include the twin quakes in Venezuela, magnitude 7.5 and 7.2, which caused over 6,400 deaths; a magnitude 7.8 quake off Mindanao, Philippines; a magnitude 7.4 quake in Colombia; and a magnitude 7.7 quake in eastern Indonesia.

Earthquakes During the 7-Year Tribulation

If Matthew 24 describes the birth pains, the book of Revelation describes the delivery.

Within the futurist reading of Revelation — the framework held by most premillennial interpreters — chapters 6 through 19 describe a 7-year period of intensifying divine judgement, structured around 3 sets of 7 judgements: the seals, the trumpets, and the bowls. Remarkably, earthquakes punctuate all 3 sequences, each greater than the last.

In the Sixth Seal judgement, the first great seismic event arrives with cosmic accompaniment: “The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place” (Revelation 6:12-14).

Note the phrase – “every mountain and island was removed from its place.” Even at this early stage, the disturbance is global and topographical, not merely local.

As the seventh seal opens, “an angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake” (Revelation 8:5). Here, the earthquake is directly linked to the prayers of the saints ascending before God — a judgment released in response to intercession.

After the two witnesses are resurrected and ascend, "there was a severe earthquake and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven" (Revelation 11:13). This is one of the few judgements in Revelation that is followed by any acknowledgement of God. It is a sobering reminder that judgement sometimes accomplishes what mercy alone cannot.

The pattern is unmistakable: with each successive judgement cycle – seals, trumpets, and bowls – the seismic activity intensifies. The birth pains keep accelerating towards delivery.

After the seventh trumpet sounds, the heavenly temple opens and the ark of the covenant is revealed. Then come "flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and a severe hailstorm" (Revelation 11:19).

The pattern is unmistakable: with each successive judgement cycle – seals, trumpets, and bowls – the seismic activity intensifies. The birth pains keep accelerating towards delivery.

The Great Earthquake of Revelation 16

Then comes the seventh bowl — and with it, the greatest earthquake in the planet's history.

Revelation 16:16-20 (NIV) - The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It is done!” Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake. The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed… Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found.

This is not a regional catastrophe. It is not even a continental one. This is a global reconfiguration of the Earth's surface. The text describes the complete flattening of the world's topography — the disappearance of every island and the levelling of every mountain range on the planet.

Read the final sentence again, slowly – “Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found.”

This is not a regional catastrophe. It is not even a continental one. This is a global reconfiguration of the Earth's surface. The text describes the complete flattening of the world's topography — the disappearance of every island and the levelling of every mountain range on the planet.

John underscores the magnitude with a superlative that has no rival: “No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth.” This is not the greatest earthquake in recorded history but the greatest in human history — surpassing every seismic event since the creation of planet Earth.

The theological significance is profound. God is not merely judging the earth. He is preparing it.

The flattening of the earth in Revelation 16 is not merely destructive. It is preparatory — clearing the terrain for the Millennial Reign of Christ from an exalted Jerusalem. God demolishes before He rebuilds.

Consider the prophetic anticipations. Isaiah declares: “Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain” (Isaiah 40:4). Zechariah 14:4-10 describes the Mount of Olives splitting into two at the Messiah’s return and the land around Jerusalem being turned into a plain with Jerusalem elevated above it.

The flattening of the earth in Revelation 16 is not merely destructive. It is preparatory — clearing the terrain for the Millennial Reign of Christ from an exalted Jerusalem. God demolishes before He rebuilds.

There is also an obvious symbolic dimension. Throughout Scripture, mountains are the seats of the gods — Sinai, Zion, Hermon, Olympus, the ziggurats of Babel. High places are where humanity has always sought to touch the divine on its own terms. When every mountain is levelled and every island vanishes, God erases every rival elevation. No high places will remain. There will be only one throne.

Conclusion: The Unshakeable Kingdom

The author of Hebrews draws the only conclusion that matters: “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:26-29).

Every earthquake is a reminder that the material world — for all its apparent permanence — is temporary, provisional, and destined for removal.

The Christian is therefore not called to fear the shaking. He is called to build on what cannot be shaken.

When the news reports the next earthquake, the believer's response should not be anxious calculation of prophetic timelines. Instead, it should be the sober recognition that the birth pains continue; the labour is real, and the delivery is coming. And with it, a King whose kingdom no seismic force in heaven or earth can ever disrupt.

Be watchful, grateful, and unshaken!
